Introduction

Welcome! I'm the David Allan Hubbard Professor of Old Testament in the School of Theology at Fuller Seminary (David Allan Hubbard was long-time President of Fuller and an Old Testament scholar and professor).   I studied theology at Oxford, was ordained and worked as a pastor in London, and later gained my PhD from Nottingham University after becoming a professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at John's Theological College (seminary) in Nottingham, England.  I was principal of the theological college for nearly ten years before coming to Fuller in 1997.  I was married to Ann for 43 years; she died in 2009; I have two married sons.  I am now married to Kathleen Scott.  For me, being a professor is thus a subset of being a pastor, and I am also priest-in-charge of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Pasadena.

On this site you'll find syllabuses and course notes for my courses, papers of mine on different parts of the Old Testament (categorized in accordance with the way the Fuller courses work), and material about me.  I don't believe much in copyright (but I observe it for other people!) so you are welcome to use any of the material and do what you like with it, but if you alter it, please don't attach my name to your revised version!

You can see a list of my writings in a file below.  At the moment I am engaged on three writing projects, which you can read about below, along with the books I hope to have coming out soon.  I also serve on the editorial board for the Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies.

In the files listed below there are:

* A formal version of my bio in the file called "CV."

* A more interesting version in the file called "Vita."

* An alternative version in the file called "Life as a Haircut."

* A list of things I have written in the file called "Books and Papers" (The text of many of the actual papers appears under the tabs at the top of this page)

* A file of "Things I am alleged to have said in class."

* The text of my book The Usual Suspects (U.K. edition)/Walk On (U.S. edition), which includes a lot of personal refections and tells you a lot about me.

* My eulogy for Ann, which contains the seed thoughts of a memoir called Remembering Ann, published in the U.K. by Piquant.

* Something about my marriage in 2010 to Kathleen Scott

* Kathleen's recipe for the scones we serve when we invite students for dessert

My current projects:

In the first hour or so of the day I work at a Biblical Theology, which I promise to be not more than one volume.  But don't hold your breath on when I may finish.

For the rest of the morning, I work at  the Old Testament for Everyone commentary series, published by Westminster John Knox and SPCK. As I write this intro in 2011, the volumes on Genesis to Kings are published.  I have completed Chronicles to Psalms and they will come out in 2012-13.  I am due to finish the remaining volumes by Spring 2013, if I don't die first (I always feel I should add that).

In the afternoon I work at the International Critical Commentary on Isaiah 56-66.  I hope to finish that in early 2012.

If you wonder when I teach, then that's in the evening as far as possible.

As well as Remembering Ann I also had come out in 2011 another volume of articles called Key Questions about Interpretation (published in the U.S.A. by Baker; earlier versions of the individual papers appear under the "Theology/Interpretation" tab).

Thanks

John Goldingay
